I must vent.

Today I received an Email from my son's teacher telling me that Younger Son missed turning in a major assignment. She went into great detail about how she'd informed the class about the project three weeks ago, that the dates were posted on her web page for the school site, and how she was accepting late work only through tomorrow ( Read more... )

Teachers can't be so stupid as to not recognize that these projects aren't the sole work of their students. Shame on them, they shouldn't allow shit like that. If a project says that the child is supposed to do the work and it is clear that they didn't then the child should receive an F.

The teachers need to put a stop to this bullshit because it isn't fair to kids who don't have parents willing/able to do their projects.

And I think Young Son taking an F is a good thing. I am living with my sister right now and seeing *terrible* parenting, you're definitely not a terrible parent. He might be mad right now but these are lessons and consequences you want him to learn now and not later when the stakes are higher, ya know?

And yet you know as well as I do that our California schools are incredibly competitive, and an F on a report card means summer school, repeated grades and lost opportunities. Here in Orange county some of these parents are batshit crazy about their babies getting into the high schools of their choice. I'm not trying to compete with these whackos, but I sure don't want my son losing out on his education either.

Like I said, it's just frustrating as hell.

I so understand! I never had children, but I totally agreed. In fact the last few years I taught I worked in class time for the students to work on their projects, because I didn't want parents doing the work.

You did absolutely right, by refusing to do the work. I hate these major projects that are assigned almost a month. The teacher still needs to give almost a daily reminder...not just a note on a blackboard or newsletter.

BTW, Cinco, what's this about you writing a book? Twenty Shades of Gray?

Your Power Exchange is better by a mile!

I prefer a teacher working with them in class too because he or she can give them the guidance and refocus that they need to DO it themselves, so yeah!

*Blush* Thank you--it's nice to know that series is still being read!

Im sorry Kaye, but you did the right thing. Younger son needs to learn that failing to do his work will get him a big fat failing grade! He needs to learn that he has to do the work not leave it up to you! And yes I dont blame you for being pissed at the teacher too...

Thanks, babe--it IS hard, and yet I know that in the teacher's mind I'm not a caring parent because of it, grrrr.

I don't know the teacher so I can't say, but I'd hope she realizes that it isn't your responsibility to keep up with, much less do the work, it's your son's. If he doesn't, that's his fault not yours.

Please! Youre supposed to do HIS homework? I think not! Let her think what she wants, the facts are Younger is old enough to do his homework and if he doesnt do it then he gets a bad grade... I hope he learns a good lesson.

I was just talking to a co-worker yesterday who was showing me pictures of the mission she made for her daughter's school project and lamenting that teachers assigned these projects since it always ended up being the parents who did them ( ... )
