*HUG* Good for you. Sometimes that's all anyone can do. Also, "sin" is a concept that some faiths don't even acknowledge. It sucks that in this country, in this day and age, that so many people are so ridiculously small-minded that they can't admit that, for someone else, their faith might not work.

I reconnected with an old friend this week on Facebook, only to find out that she's a Republican and an Evangelical Christian. I've known Barb and Travis for going on 12 years, and had no idea. We talked about it for a long time, and they accept me and I accept them, for who we all are. They're good people who have different ideological and spiritual beliefs than I do, but we can get along and talk like good people should be able to talk.

*HUG* You just keep on keepin' on. Go you.

Oh, and as a leader in the faith community, I'm kind of called to talk about faith and crises thereof, if you or your friend need someone unbiased (though, of a different faith -- I'm Wiccan) with whom to chat. My ears are always available.

I think you answered him pretty well.
It's not always easy combining being gay and religion, but it can be done.
Big hugs for being there for your friend!!!!

All your response is good, but it's built on the premise that the Bible says that homosexuality is wrong, which is in itself a very arguable point ( ... )

Think of it this way.

In the context of the Old Testament (where the anti-gay stuff is found) mothers and babies were lucky if they survived childbirth. The babies that survived were lucky if they lived to be a year old. Most people died before they were 30.

In a primitive, nomadic, desert tribal situation like that, if you weren't devoting every free moment to producing children, it quite literally could be a threat to the survival of your tribe.

In that context, in that time and place, prohibitions against being gay actually kinda make sense ( ... )

It's late and I'm tired .. so forgive if this sounds harsh ... mrdreamjeans January 15 2009, 05:11:37 UTC
I don't often speak on the topic. I'm way too cynical, but I'm irritated by Gay men who are brainwashed into thinking they are somehow less because their religions preach hatred of anyone who is different .. same thing for straight people who are threatened by Gay marriage ... If your faith is true and strong or if you've got a good marriage, how is my wanting and having the same thing negatively affect you? It doesn't. Faith will be tested, but should be unshakeable ( ... )
