My first resolution

When I was growing up, I didn't much believe in the power of making a New Year's resolution. They were always very cliche and the message I received was that no human being ever actually followed through. How pessimistic is that? Then a few years ago I started making them myself. Sure enough, I committed myself to follow through on each of these resolutions.

Sometimes just that word - resolution - makes follow-through difficult. So use a different one. Call it a goal. Call it a committment. Call it an idea. Anything. But take this time to commit to do something just for you.

This year, one of my first resolutions was to keep a journal. As I've explained to some of my friends, I've kept sporadic journals in the past. A few years in grade school, because of a requirement. The month I spent in Spain after high school. The documentation of my realization I am gay, and of sharing that realization with my friends and family.

I wanted to begin again partially because I'm finding I have the memory of a 6-week-old puppy. Can't seem to latch on to so many details. Maybe I just don't pay attention. I figure if I ever want to reminisce someday, this will be the first step, so I begin here.

Happy New Year!
