9.  The Black Stallion by someone or other

I never read this as a child, so why not?   I loved the boy's relationship with the Black.

walter farley is the author. Be careful his son has started trying to write his own version of the series.

I never read this either. I read BLACK BEAUTY. Not sure why, unless I outgrew my horse phase before I got to it. (grin)

I also suggest um, I think the name of it was the Red Stallion? no, Island Stallion. Gods, I loved the Black Stallion books. I agree with rhoda though, his son's books just aren't as good. My horse phase included Walter Farley's stuff, Anne Sewell (Black Beauty), and Marguerite Henry (Misty of Chincoteague series). All worth reading.

Oh, yeah, the Black Stallion series was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I also liked Walter Farley's Island Stallion series. If it was about a horse, chances are I read it when I was a kid.

May I recommend Chosen by a Horse by Susan Richards? I read it in January and posted both in my journal and the 50 Book Challenge.
