Under normal circumstance, Reid would have agreed with Luke that his family was being overprotective. One of the things that drove Reid crazy about the Snyders - and there were many of them - was the way they constantly underestimated Luke. But this time, he had to agree with them. He’d heard about what happened the last time a crazy Grimaldi relative had been stalking Luke, and he wasn’t about to let it happen again. So hiring protection seemed like a reasonable measure.
That didn’t mean that he liked Luke’s bodyguard. No, it didn’t mean that at all.
“Name?” Officer Scott asked blandly.
Reid held his temper. Barely. This game was getting old. “You know my name, Scotty. So beam me up, already.”
Scott, at least six foot five and nearly as broad in the shoulder, sighed, obviously bored. “Your name, sir?”
“I have been here every day for the last four days. Are you seriously telling me that you’re either too dense or too unobservant to recognize me?”
“Just following protocol, sir,” he said, tapping his pencil against the clipboard in his hand. “Mr. Snyder’s safety is my only priority. Your name and identification, please.”
Reid could feel his hands clenching into fists at his sides when he heard a chuckle coming from behind Scott.
“It’s okay, Dan. You can let Reid in,” Luke said.
Officer Scott - Dan - all tall, broad-shouldered, flat-stomached inch of him, turned and beamed at Reid’s boyfriend. “Whatever you say, Luke. You can go in, Mr. Oliver.”
“It’s DR. Oliver, you idiot,” Reid said, shouldering past the incredible hulk and ignoring Luke’s barely contained laughter.
“You’re so cute when you’re jealous,” Luke said, closing the door softly behind him.
“So we’re on a first name basis now, are we? ‘Mr. Snyder’s safety is my only priority,’” Reid mocked. “I think Mr. Snyder’s ass is his only priority. Did you have to get a gay bodyguard?”
Luke was openly laughing at him now. “That’s what I ordered, yes. Please send me your hottest gay bodyguard.”
“So you think he’s hot, do you?”
“I had to pay extra for the hot.”
Reid threw his medical bag down on Lily’s desk. “I’m so glad you’re enjoying this.”
“Like I said, you’re cute when you’re jealous.” Luke sidled up to him, pressing close, one hand on Reid’s waist, and the other threading through the hair at the nape of his neck. “You get all…intense. It’s so sexy…”
And then they were kissing, and Reid put every bit of concern, of worry, of downright panic, and - yes - a little jealousy, into that kiss. When he finally pulled away, he had to smile in satisfaction at the slightly dazed look in Luke’s eyes.
“Wow.”
“Yeah,” Reid agreed. He took Luke’s hand and pulled him down on the sofa next to him. “So, talk to me. Any news?”
Luke stared down at their joined hands, threading their fingers together. “I talked to Damian today. The prison finally let him call me.”
“And how’d that go?”
Reid kept his tone as neutral as possible. He didn’t really have an opinion on bad dad, as he’d never met him. All he cared about was how Luke felt about him. And those feelings were obviously complicated.
Luke shrugged. “Damian…he’s just so…” Luke sighed, obviously struggling to put his feelings into words. “He’s done a lot of terrible things. To me. To my family. But the bottom line is, if it came to it? He would lay down his life for me or my mother. I really believe that.”
Reid nodded. “So you believe him, that he’s not behind any of this.”
“Yes. I felt better after talking to him. And I believe he’s going to help. He’s trying to ‘settle things’, as he put it, from the inside.”
“So, basically…he’s put a hit out on this Maltese maniac who’s threatened to kidnap you?”
Luke shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “Well, he didn’t come right out and say that…”
“But that’s what he meant. I can totally get behind that,” Reid said, and found himself hoping he would get to meet the infamous Damian Grimaldi some day. Reid was a physician. He had taken the Hippocratic Oath, and believed in it with all of his being: first, do no harm. But if anyone tried to harm Luke? All bets were off.
“Reid…” Luke scolded, but there was nothing behind it. He leaned his head against Reid’s shoulder. “Do you ever wonder what you’ve gotten yourself into with me? Only six months in, and already it’s all kidnapping threats and bodyguards.”
Reid pulled Luke closer, pressing his nose into his hair, comforted by the scent. “Just don’t get too chummy with Officer Friendly and we’ll be fine, “ Reid said. He could feel Luke’s body shake with laughter.
“He’s not my type,” he finally said, lifting his head to look into Reid’s eyes. Reid swallowed, hard.
“What’s your type, Mr. Snyder? I seem to remember you dating tall, dark and dense for quite some time…”
Luke pretended to be insulted. “Noah is a very intelligent person!”
“He let you go, didn’t he? Not a real smart move from my point of view…”
Luke beamed at him. “Well…my tastes have changed, Dr. Oliver. Now I like ‘em…”
“Brilliant and obnoxious?”
Luke shook his head, amused. “Yeah, among other things,” he said. “Thanks for putting up with all of this nonsense, Reid. I know life with me is kind of crazy.”
And wasn’t that the understatement of the year. But for Luke, Reid would put up with just about anything: Insane family members and annoying ex-boyfriends and kidnapping threats. And even hot bodyguards.
Reid sighed heavily. “You’re just lucky that I love you so much, Mr. Snyder,” he said.
Luke beamed that megawatt smile at him again. The one that made it all worth it. “Yeah,” he said, just before kissing him. “I really, really am.”
