I saw Calamity Jane in a downtown theater, one that would be rightly styled a 'movie palace'. I remember gigantic gilted pillars and painted ceilings. It's the only time I remember going somewhere so fancy. I remember the movie for the 'stagecoach song' mostly.

"Whip crack-away, whip crack-away, whip crack-a-WAAAYYYYYY!"

Yup, I really did commit the entire score (and most of the dialogue) to memory . . . kind of frightening to realize how much of it is still up there, taking up valuable space that I might be using for something more helpful--like why it was I went down stairs with that pencil in my hand the other day . . . (I am about to the point of wearing a tablet around my neck and just writing these things down. Post-menopausal friends tell me that the short-term memory will come back, eventually ( ... )

John Denver - one of my favorites, too. So sad the radios dropped his music after he died. Hmm... maybe I can talk the oldies station into adding him to their lineup; I think he qualifies now.

Ayy, Calypso, I sing to your spirit...

Yes, I really enjoyed the recent special that our local PBS show did on him as part of their fundraising effort . . . I might need to ask for that as my gift-with-donation this year. I really loved his cheerful willingness to embrace his lack of cool, and of course I knew and loved the places he was singing about . . . a far cry from the pretty little hills they call the Appalachian "Mountains." Rocky Mountain High, indeed!
