Generosity doesn't begin to say it. Thank you. I'll put this in my memories, keep it private, and bring it out to read and pet in those times when I'm sure nobody has ever liked anything I've ever written. Every writer falls into that pit now and again.

I hope it didn't bother you to see my punctuation whimisicality (so many free-range commas)in the Giles and Ethan answers at TM. I puzzle myself sometimes when I go back to look at the stories. "Why ever did I do that?" I say. There's really no answer.

That's exactly what I do with the thank-you letters I get from graduating seniors and alums: some days, I feel I shouldn't even bother getting up, much less entering a classroom, but knowing that at least some folks feel I'm doing a decent job makes a huge difference. You, of course, are doing quite a bit more than a "decent job"!

Actually, there are days when I feel there may be an inverse relationship between textbook comma use and writing talent, like some sort of law of physics. I certainly seem to represent one end of such a continuum, and I know of a number of fine writers who are at the other. Those who can, write--the rest of us proofread!
