(April 14, 2010) - Butler sophomore Gordon Hayward has declared his intention to submit his name for the NBA draft, according to an announcement today by his father.

Hayward's father, Gordon Sr., said in a text message that his son is not hiring an agent. The two met on campus Tuesday to discuss his playing future.
The deadline is May 8 for players who want to retain college eligibility to withdraw from draft consideration. Players who don't hire an agent are allowed to return to college basketball, but they may exercise that option only once. The draft is June 24.

Hayward, 20, a 6-9 sophomore from Brownsburg, Ind., led Butler on a surprise run to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament.

Duke defeated the Bulldogs 61-59 in the championship game April 3 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Hayward averaged 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds for the 33-5 Bulldogs. He shot 29.4 percent from the 3-point line, down from last season's 44.8 percent. In six NCAA Tournament games, he averaged 15.8 points and 7.0 rebounds, and shot 28.6 percent on 3s.

He was a member of the all-tournament team of July's under-19 World Basketball Championship, Horizon League Player of the Year, Most Outstanding Player of the West Regional and a member of the Final Four all-tournament team.

I don't really have much time to comment on this right now, but I will post a follow-up soon.

I will say, though, that I am bummed. :(
