Star Trek in Darkness. I enjoyed it but if you asked me now about the plot... I would just remember Benedict Cumberbatch and the PURE JOY one feels to see SPOCK yell "KHAN!!!!!!!" is just... something one cannot explain. It was kittens and rainbows and like a gift from baby jesus. I love that. HOWEVER, as for the rest.... it's a blur. I would blame my gender but I know A LOT of female Trekies that would get upset if I did so. I am just not an actiony person. I like Science Fiction, but more cerebral, time travel, parallel universe stuff. When there are crashes and battles and fights and punches and weapons and Zzzzzz. I'm sorry I just lump it all together. My brother HATES this but EVERY Space battle in ALL the Star Wars films look the same to me. I couldn't tell you which was from what film or who was going where and doing what but being chased by whom for what purpose. I just know that James Earl Jones is Luke's father.
((Keep the fact that I mentioned my brother in mind, that will be coming up again))
The Purge- REALLY great concept (for 12 hours a year, all crime is legal, called Purge night. No 911, no cops, no help, rape, murder, torture, theft, everything. From Sundown to Sun up, anything goes.)
Cool concept. MY problem was with this film (I heard there is a sequel that fixes this gripe) but it all takes place in ONE house. It was claustrophobic yet Paranormal activity is always in a single house and I didn't feel that way. I wanted to see more of what was going on with other families, out in the streets, preparing for purge, more build up. Maybe 3 or 4 families all with different a different crisis and cutting between them, the way they do on the Walking Dead when the group is split up. But Purge 2 is supposedly more out in the world, so... also, you get to see Cersei from Game of Thrones and that she can act and look/be contemporary and even likable.
So that was my short sweet girlie reviews. Y. will give you more when he has time....it's been CRAZY for us all.
Now, as for 'my brother'... You know, next month, not only will I turn 35 but 10 days later will mark the second anniversary of THIS film blog. And though half of you just know us through here and we started off trying to be anonymous, the other half, I/we have gotten to know, be friends with and are on other blogs of mine. You already know that "Y." is my husband (common-law, engaged 6 years, health has prevented us from taking the legal vows but I should be well enough by next year). So here is another little piece of information that I think it's fine for you to know. Our third member (and one of the three original founders.. we have had 7 writer's over time), "Xim" is not only a film-maker, student of cinema, and film lover... he is also my beloved big brother.
He was driving and working in (where else) a movie theater as a teenager and without him, I wouldn't have the PROFOUND LOVE and RESPECT for this art form that I do. I spent many days and nights in that and other movie houses, seeing age appropriate films with my brother. That started in the mid eighties and his next teenage job was in a video rental store that were starting to pop up everywhere so every night almost, I got to see a new movie. As I grew, he introduced me to the classics as well as the new releases. I spent many school days waiting for that clock to let me out because Xim was taking me to the movies after school!! I got music and movies for my birthdays and Xmas. Without him I would not have the appreciation for cinema and music that I have. By 7 I was a BEATLES FANATIC, had seen and loved Blade Runner, though I didn't understand it completely, and by my teens, Harold and Maude, Terry Gilliam, Twin Peaks, The Prisoner, Hitchcock, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, and sooooooo many others were in my collection (not to mention all the new wave, jazz, punk, folk, and all types of cool music he gave me.. I was into the Cure, Smiths, and Depeche' Mode by 12, thanks to Xim.)
It was HE who had the idea for this blog one night after I casually reviewed one of his short films. He said my observations were astute and well thought out and I or we should start a film blog. My husband joined in and though we have had a rotating door of drummers (or 4th writer), thankfully, we now have R., a film student and cinema lover.
The reason I decided to come clean with things and drop the anonymity was not only because many already knew, but because of our subject today....well, one of them. You see, Xim is a HUGE Audrey Hepburn fan. He loves her films, her pixie looks, her style. Natalie Wood and Audrey are his two favourite actresses, if I remember correctly. Anyway, I remember one day in my teens I believe, maybe early 20's.... I had been working out hard all day again. Yet no matter how small I got my waist and my legs, I was built like my mother. I was petite, 5'4, 115 pounds or so. Yet NOTHING I could do could make my ample bosom and bum go away!!
This was at the height of the "heroin chic" period and I came to see my brother who was watching an Audrey Hepburn movie and make a comment about how he just loved her, and I pouted that I couldn't wear clothes like Audrey. I was curvy not willowy. I was almost to the point of tears, telling Xim how hard I worked out to be 'like Audrey' and I still had a little 'T & A' problem. And I will NEVER forget what he said to me and I replay it often when I need to: "Sis, some women are just built like Audrey Hepburn and some people like me think that is attractive. BUT.. OTHER people think the EPITOME of female allure and appeal is Marilyn Monroe. Sweetie, it's okay. Don't beat yourself up because you weren't 'made like Audrey'. Be proud that you were built like Marilyn and embrace that because somebody is going to see you and say "WOW a smart, nice, cool chick that is ALSO built like Marilyn!!! I'm the luckiest person on earth!!"
I stopped "hating" and "loathing" the fact that I was busty and had junk in trunk... juice in the caboose... a rack in the back... a rare derrière. I started to be "Ok" that I was never going to be 'an Audrey' because I was 'a Marilyn'. He probably forgot he even said that to me but over the years, it has popped into my head often when I get down on myself for not being a clothes hanger!!
Anyway, the last Poll was which of the 12 people (and 3 honorees) that have won the Big 4 (The Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) were you most interested in. and though one point apart, here are your male and female winners.... and a poll if you want to point out your favourite movies of theirs.
Poll Which of these movies was a favourite of yours?! If anybody wants to start a conversation about any of these films, please, be my guest. Or we can see the results and go from there, whatever you prefer!!
Once again, thank you for you time and we hope you have a wonderful day!!
