So I just received a shortened version of the books that I need for Year One of the English Literature uni course. Some are SET books, and others are background reading... there are also some books that are recommended to be read before starting the course (but it's not compulsory ( Read more... )

If I were you, library first and see if they have any. If they don't, I sure they can get them from another library. I wouldn't atually buy anything til you start the course. They will have them in the campus library too, I'm sure. But when you get there you should look out for people selling their old copies, check out the noticeboards in your department and in the library.

*many many many hugs* Thank you. I'm freaking out about uni now... It's not that I don't want to go, but I don't want things to change, you know?

No worries! Don't freak about uni though. The first year is pretty easy anyway and you'll make loads of new friends. Also, I'm sure you've been told this before (it's such a teacher line, but it's really true), but the jump between GCSE's and A-Levels is far bigger than the jump between A-levels and degree. So don't panic. Chances are, no one else on your course will have done the suggested reading anyway.

It's not the course that worries me.

I'm gonna miss my family soooooo much and I'm scared that I won't be able to stand on my own two feet.

I keep telling myself that it's just Cardiff- just a 25 min train journey away, but it doesn't help. I can't seem to stop... crying about it. It's pathetic. It makes me hate me.

Don't buy anything before the course starts, check the library and check out some of the suggested reading and background reading. For the actual books you'll use in class check your uni's notice board (pretty much anyone who's taken the course already will most likely want to get rid of their books). And when you have to buy books if all of the above fails go second hand, trust me in the long run you'll save a lot of money and you can still pawn them off on someone next year.

Are any of the books you need widely used because if so I might have them... be glad to send them over if I did.

Um, some of them are well-known but most of the background ones are pretty obscure... I'll email the list to you. Thanks for helping out. *triple squishes*

I'm a little late to this, as I've been out of town. but I agree with everyone--wait to buy anything for when the class actually starts. See if a library has some of the required reading and at least scan those, get a little bit of background on it. For the recommended but not required reading, if you have time I'd recommend taking a look at them if you have time. But a lot of the time, in my experience anyway, some of the sugggested material ends up being nothing that is ever referred to in your program of study.

So are you excited?? :D

Uh... kinda. Still nervous/scared too, but I'm trying to ignore that.
