Oh my dear lord -- I hadn't even heard of these fires! Now, admittedly, the minute I hear "BP" I turn off the T.V. and close the Web site, but ... how awful.
I hope you had a nice day, though. But that is really terrible to hear. And to hear (and see) how it's affecting more than just a small area (cue the duh music) is so sad to see.
You and me both on the news blackout. I only found out what it was I ventured out into the world this afternoon. Duh.
My dad was a forest ranger and smoke jumper. He always told me that a bit of natural burn is healthy; that's how habitats are renewed. (And that's the reasoning behind controlled burns.) But when they're so huge, or out of control, or threaten towns-- it gets ugly.
I'm thinking of the rangers tonight. That's one of the most dangerous jobs there is. I hope they all make it home safe and sound.
That's a great point -- it's hard to remember that some burning is actually natural and part of the process. I hear "fire" and freak out. Although, I miss the smell of burning leaf piles and garbage that I used to smell was I was a kid in Mississippi. :D
Have there been any injuries thus far? Thank goodness for people like your dad who are brave and smart enough to go out into the fire, literally, on behalf of everyone else in danger.
I grew up hearing about the Mann Gulch Fire, which is as epic and awful a fire as can be imagined. I don't know how my mom stood it: every fire could be that one.
Hard to believe the smoky smell could drift this far! But it was really strong this morning. Well, it might be really strong now, too, but I've gotten used to it.

Nature. It's, like, vast.

Tread with caution. There are some pictures in there, well... you could hurt yourself.
