He stared in horror at the confectionary nightmare that stood in pride of place in the middle of the table. Dark brown and gently steaming, covered in syrupy sauce, with some kind of foliage on top.
He stared at the three people around the table. The king, pardon, queen - well, she still was, no one had killed her yet - the whelp, and the whelp's whelp. They'd dragged him into this for some reason. Christmas and tradition had been two words they'd repeated over and over.
He'd thought it easier to just give in. Besides, in a fancy house like theirs, there sure would be rum.
There was. He could smell it. Only not in a nice, friendly bottle.
He stared at the cake again.
'But why's the rum gone into a cake?' Jack wailed.
