I have a wordpress.com blog. Mostly because there are a few non LJ people who read me. It was really easy to set up and it's free. You don't have a lot of choice about what it looks like unless you are willing pay and willing to mess around with the CSS.
I also have a free wordpress.com blog. I like it as a knitblog, but it's missing the community feel of lj. And I don't know how the equivalent of locked entries would work. That is, I know they exist, and they're not hard to post, but I think the lack of a wordpress friendslist equivalent makes them less functional.
I'm on blogspot. Haven't had any problems... but then, I haven't had any need to restrict who reads the blog or who comments on it. It's free; it fits my needs. :)
I use blogspot. It's free. There are a lot of templates to choose from. (Or you can do your own or get one from elsewhere - I am no where near that stage though) It's easy to put your widgets where you want them. Believe me when I started in May I had no clue whatsoever and it worked out. Posting is easy, even pics. I'm happy with it.
I also use blogger. If I were really smart, I'd add a different template, other than the ones they offer. (I don't know jack about that kind of stuff.) But it's free and it's pretty easy to set up. There have been a few things that weren't easy to add (I'm thinking sidebar stuff here), but I've managed to figure it out. And if *I* can figure it out....
