I've tried it in direct line after I and II, to see if it would be better, and it wasn't really. Hm. Although I did develop a newfound affection for Barbossa.
I got to see Sweeney Todd in ABQ!
I just got back to town in the early hours of this morning. I'll call you tomorrow.
Yeah, I don't think I'll be trying to do a trilogy viewing with these movies. While I felt II was bumpy at the beginning, at least it made more sense and tended to keep most of the characters IC, so I still like it. This one, though... oh, well, we can talk that out tonight. :)
Yeah, I will agree that I like Barbossa even more for this one. I liked him in PotC I, too, but he was definitely less evil in this one. Also, I can totally see the Barbossa/Jack slash from this movie. Not that I'll ever go looking to read it *shudder*, but I understand the impulse for it now.
Did you also squee, "In another lifetime, Aberforth was a pirate! WIN!!!!" during that one sequence? *arches eyebrow*

*hugs* Just remember to call after 9 pm my time. My mother, despite her assurances that she only used about 250 minutes a month, has blown through almost all our 600 anytime minutes for our billing cycle. I am so making her pay any overage.
POTC3 was sort of like troy - i luffed them on the big screen because it was so spectacular to see, and then was all, 'meh' when i got the dvds. i luffed POTC3 in the theatre - it was lovely to look at and all the running around and explosions were fun.
I suppose it would have been better to see on the big screen; I'll definitely agree that some of the bigger action sequences would have looked better. But did you think that was any kind of resolution to Will's storyline? I felt it was a rather cheep cop-out - in the end, he was simply like his father, a pirate. I don't know, I just felt most of the plot was far too contrived, with the way the writers tried to tie up every little gag that had been in the previous movies (the dog, for goodness sake!).
I was actually in a deep rage at the end of POTC3 so it's kind of tainted my whole experience of the film. Hubby and I really were enjoying the whole spectacle of the thing; it was exciting, and the visuals were amazing, but I dunno...it's gotten so far flung from the original and Will lost so much of his sweetness. And then THAT end for the two of them, particularly Elizabeth, just sitting around waiting for ten years and raising a child, as a good woman should...GRRRRRRR! Ack. Don't get me started.
I wasn't even sure if I was gonna buy the DVD but hubby got it for me for Christmas...because, well, he knows I'm such an Orlando girl. And Orli is sooooooo damn hot in it, even if he is dead, or undead, or whatever the hell happened. *clutches hair*
I don't know, I still feel all of the storylines were poorly meshed in the final movie. I had already disliked the Davy Jones storyline in PotC II, but the addition of the ultimately pointless Calypso reveal made it even more untenable for me (because what's the point in revealing someone as a goddess if she's just going to disappear?). I also felt like most of the characterizations became very, very sketchy, or so broad they were beyond caricature. In the end, I just felt that the movie was sacrificed to action, which is a far cry from the way the first PotC balanced action, plot, and characterization.
What gets me about the end... would he even have been able to get Elizabeth pregnant? He is dead, after all, even if under a curse; shouldn't that have made the little swimmers stop swimming?
I totally agree. The only way you can enjoy two and three is just to let the nonsense wash over you and enjoy the pretteh and the action. I was disappointed in the Calypso stuff too, and a lot of the "rules" they imposed on the curses and such just didn't make any sense whatsoever. A good movie is not supposed to make you go Bzuh? at every plot point--or if it does, there should be a big OH I get it now! at the end. Which there wasn't.
I think it's the mistake of a lot of writers to just twist the characters to fit whatever plot or action they want going on--never mind if it actually fits who they are or what they would actually do.
Another part of the problem was that they were trying to make these movies to appeal to everyone, from children on up. So it was too dark and twisted for children, and too much caricature for adults.
And right on about the pregnancy...heh...I'd never thought of that, but it does make sense. But of course nothing in the movie was tied to sense, really!
