Summary: Sasuke's training is discussed.

Once summoned, Kabuto appeared on one knee, one fist to the floor, in Orochimaru's office. "You called for a status report on Sasuke-kun, Orochimaru-sama?"

Orochimaru didn't look up from his work, but nodded, "I did indeed. What do you have for me, hm?"

Kabuto's tone was polite, but had a slight edge of either amusement or irritation. "He's been increasingly difficult, but I'm sure that's not coming as a surprise to you with the way he walks off the training field before you dismiss him. He refused his last medical exam entirely."

Orochimaru stopped working, looking back at Kabuto over his shoulder.

"Did he, now. That is going to be a problem." He turned and leaned against the table, arms folded. "He is indeed difficult, but I can't force him to do anything without ruining the psychological dependency I have created. He stays of his own free will, and that is binding. However, I don't see why we can't think of some way to punish him... indirectly," he grinned, the low light making the expression much more sadistic than amused.

Kabuto nodded, glasses glinting, "Yes, Orochimaru-sama."

Orochimaru continued, "I don't suppose you have any menial errands for him to run, hm? Not that he'll accept, but what's on the list?"

Taking a moment to reflect, the medic-nin responded, "We're in need of a few more live test subjects for my pain-chakra experiments. He's very good at leaving his targets alive, so that's something he's well suited for." His tone seemed to indicate that talent would have to be trained out of Sasuke at some point in the near future. "Additionally, I do need a rather extensive list of herbal and medicinal supplies, not all of which can be found in nearby towns.

"But that would depend on how far you would want him to go, Orochimaru-sama. He seems to enjoy getting out of the compound. It may not be a suitable task to send him shopping."

"Hmph. You are to inform him that apart from taking that exam, his only other things to do will be gathering those supplies for you. I will do no more with him until he agrees to the exam, but he can gather as many flowers and whatever else you need." Orochimaru waved a hand dismissively, adding, "If he wants to roam around doing errands instead of training, that is his choice to make."

Kabuto smiled, still in the bow. "Yes, Orochimaru-sama. I will inform him immediately." He looked up and added, by way of the original reason for his summoning, "As to your report request, Sasuke-kun's physical attributes are rising, though. Steadily. He's making great progress, and the damage he's taking has been significantly lowered by the drug therapy and the healing jutsus.

"He's aging a little faster than usual, but the wear and tear will do that, and it's not significant enough to have an effect on the shape you'd like him to be in. In fact, it may be doing that some good as well." Though Kabuto couldn't imagine Orochimaru was much different as a teenager, he didn't want to know what fluctuating hormone levels would do to his already unstable temperament.

Orochimaru nodded, smiling and satisfied. "He seems in good shape. I have you to thank for that. And if he wants to continue both progressing and doing so safely, he will do as I say."

As Kabuto nodded agreement, Orochimaru added, "I worry about the boy, sometimes, as his time is coming to an end. I don't trust him completely." He made a sharp, small sound of amusement. "I don't trust you, completely, Kabuto-kun," he kept his eyes on his medic, interested in his reaction.

Keeping his face completely neutral, Kabuto replied, "I think you've been able to cement the idea that he will get no revenge unless he gives himself to you, Orochimaru-sama. He may have second thoughts, but not strong enough to break him from the path you've trained him on."

Orochimaru smiled knowingly, noting absence of a response to the real question. "I think we are safe in that assumption for the time being." He turned back to the work table. "Go, now, deliver my message. You are dismissed."

"Hai, Orochimaru-sama." With a last glint of his glasses, Kabuto disappeared.
