Your friend is cool! They are a fantastic metre. I'm a little suspicious of 'american tanka'/'english-language haiku' because the tendency is toward free-verse epigrams, which are yes very interesting but a different thing to metred verse with rules. To adopt a metre and work within it seems so much more interesting!
