Haha I'd never have thought of that but it's been clear for a while that my mind isn't dirty enough to keep up with teh Japanese ._. (or teh Romans, or...)

I actually collapsed in giggles in my tutorial over this poem - maybe maybe the poem's pure pure longing but i'm not the only one who sat there going "the grassy path to my hut you used to visit ahahah oh dere". I dunno, I wouldn't put it past Toshinari's daughter - she tends to complicated/sideways-on/v-recursive poems, most of the time, so when you get a simple-looking one you think 'okay there must be a hidden meaning going on' (that isn't just the karegare/withers and withers/rarely pun). I sort of think of Sadaie and Toshinari-no-Musume as Osbert and Edith Sitwell, or Leo and Gertrude Stein, or some similar sibling pair, out-styling each other at every turn.

like, she wrote him a letter criticising his choice of poems for one of the imperial collections he edited because she thought he'd betrayed their aesthetic.
