Happy birthday, freakytigger!

This morning, I have decided, I am going to put my dissertation aside and GO FOR A WALK. perhaps I shall listen to freaky trigger and the lollards as pop as I do so! Or maybe I'll go somewhere nice and - finally - finish Nik Cohn's Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom (which i bought about six years ago and just started this morning). ( Read more... )

We are using this at work. I haven't actually configured it myself, but the bar graphs my co-workers are producing with it are v.pretty.

I recently read that book in an early printing, i.e. still called Rock From The Beginning - I would be interested to know to what extent it was ever revised to cut out things that were presumably "okay" to say in 1968 but cringe-inducing at best now, e.g. calling someone a "Negress"... I almost liked reading that version best though, you really get the sense that it was just this presumptuous 22 year-old kid making it up as he went along, summing up artists in two sentences, making inaccurate predictions about what the Beatles and Stones would do, slagging the Doors*, etc...

*best line in the book is probably where he says that the counterculture is more easy to con than the mainstream...

This is the 2004 edition, and I don't think it's been much revised, if at all - there's a lot of "c0l0ur3d" and "n3gr0" and etc. You can tell he doesn't exactly mean it badly but it's still a massive jolt every time you come across the words.

the 'making it up as he went along' of it is definitely the best part!
