I thought I'd express in a few more words than I have before (and mainly in comments on other journals) what I've been thinking about some of the meaning to the ending for the TSCC season finale. I'd told several people that John's "heaven is hell", and so here's some more thoughts on that.

And I was thinking this morning, the idea of "no fate but what we make", that sentiment has always been tempered by the specter of Future!John, the one who won the war, pulling strings, watching over them, guiding them. And now with this one, split second decision, John has entirely taken him out of the equation, not only for himself, but for humanity.

Because if Sarah can't stop it (and she obviously can't alone, because the future he finds is ruined), then he has to be there to pick up the reins and save the world.
