Cissie felt awful as soon as she reached campus, but she still went to class. Not that she paid even the slightest bit of attention. Tim finally came home and she gave him the cold shoulder? What was wrong with her?
She went home as soon as her class ended, half afraid that when she got there, he would be gone again, or that she had imagined it. Entering the apartment, she dropped her things by the door and glanced into the living room to see Kon still asleep, but no sign of Tim.
She headed for the bedroom, and didn't realize she was holding her breath until she saw Tim asleep on the bed. Cissie took a deep breath and went to sit on the edge of the bed next to him. "...Tim?"
Tim mumbled under his breath and opened his eyes to blink blearily at her. "Hey Ciss." He gave her a sleepy smile. "How was class?"
"It was fine," she said with a shrug. She swallowed and reached for his hand. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. He squeezed her hand a little. "I should have called."
"You should have," she agreed quietly. "But I shouldn't have stormed off. I've missed you."
"I missed you too." He squeezed her hand again. "Every day. It's so good to be home."
She leaned over to kiss him and moved to lie down, snuggling against him. "What happened? Where were you?"
"All over. I was with the League of Assassins." He stroked her back. "That was why I didn't call. I wasn't sure it was safe."
She hugged him tightly. "I know. But--even when you were on your way home?"
"...I should have called. I'm sorry."
Cissie pressed her face against his neck and took a deep breath. "I don't really want to fight with you. I am sorry about earlier. I'm just glad you're home now."
"Me too." He kissed the top of her head. "I missed you so much. All the time."
She just held him for a minute, feeling him breathing and convincing herself that he was really there. "I missed you all the time, too." She smiled wryly. "You can ask Kon. You're okay?"
He winced slightly. "...Do you want the long version or the short version?"
"Long version," Kon said, yawning. He wandered in and flopped down next to Tim. "You suck at waking me up, by the way."
"Long version of what?" Cissie asked, propping herself up to look at him, frowning slightly.
"You needed the sleep. So did I." He glanced between the two of them. There was no way he was going to weasel out of talking about this like he had with Dick. "I'm okay now. But... there were some tense moments."
Kon elbowed him. "So tell."
"Ow."
"What happened?" Cissie asked.
Kon frowned. "I didn't elbow you that hard."
Tim tugged up his shirt a little to reveal a new scar--bigger than the typical surgical scar. "Emergency splenectomy."
"Splena-who?" Kon stared at the spot with his x-ray vision. "Wait, there's normally an organ right under that! You lost an organ!"
"...Do you look at my organs a lot, Kon?"
"I sometimes paid attention in biology!"
Cissie stiffened and frowned deeply. "Why did you need a splenectomy?"
"I... got stabbed."
"You got stabbed? In the spleen?"
Kon sat up. "Shit, is that dangerous?"
Tim shook his head. "I'm fine. People live long, productive lives without their spleens. It's not quite as useless as the appendix, but it's fine. Don't worry."
Cissie just raised a skeptical eyebrow at him.
"I'm fine," he insisted, reaching to squeeze her hand.
"Now," she muttered, squeezing back.
Kon frowned. "How many spleens do you have? Can you get extra armor on it?"
"...I had one. It's gone. I don't have to worry about armor for it."
"Then armor for the rest of your body!"
"Armor doesn't sound terrible. Where and when did this emergency splenectomy happen?" Cissie asked, still holding his hand tightly.
"I have armor. It was just... a really good sword." He made a face. "I got caught between the League of Assassins and some of their rivals. We got attacked in the desert. He killed two of the people I was with, but I made it back to civilization with the third." Barely. "The League of Assassins patched us up."
"Tim." Kon reached over and squeezed his shoulder. "What the hell were you doing? Why didn't you call for help?"
"...I was kind of preoccupied with not bleeding out while I got us back to civilization."
"I gave you a signal watch!"
"I do get distracted sometimes. With the bleeding. And the dead people. And did I mention bleeding?"
Cissie let out a slow exhale, sitting up. "Once or twice."
Kon was still frowning. "I'm gad you're not dead, at least."
"Thank you. So am I."
Cissie gave a small, incredulous laugh and put her head in her hands. "Right. Okay. Are there any other missing organs we should know about?"
Tim laughed and leaned over to give her a quick kiss. "No. The rest of my organs are where they're supposed to be."
Kon cleared his throat. "If you want me to leave..."
"That's not what I meant."
Kon shrugged. "Just saying. It's been a while. Those organs probably want to do organy things." He smirked.
Cissie laughed. "You are such a dork. And if Tim didn't look ready to pass out while we're talking, I'd say you have a point."
"I don't look ready to pass out," he grumbled.
"Mmhm. And when was the last time you slept?" she asked skeptically. "For longer than two hours?"
"...I think I slept on the plane," he hedgesd.
"Think?" Kon asked, raising an eyebrow.
"...I don't really remember. I might have just zoned out."
Kon nudged him. "Another thing about calling. You could have gotten me to fly you home way faster."
Cissie squeezed his hand. "How about before that flight? How long have you been sleep-deprived?"
He gave her a slightly sheepish look. "I didn't sleep well while I was with the League."
"Yeah, I think I'd have trouble sleeping around a bunch of people who kill for a living too," Kon said.
Cissie gave a small snort. "I think it's okay if you admit that you're tired now," she said dryly.
"Maybe a little."
"I can still leave," Kon said. "I mean, I should probably figure out what I missed in class today or something."
Tim yawned. "But I haven't told you everything yet."
Cissie raised an eyebrow at him. "There's more? I'm not sure what can top the missing spleen."
Kon listened closely for a second. "He still had a heart beat. I don't think he's become undead."
"...I blew up Ra's al Ghul's computer network."
"You what?"
"...Good job, man!"
"Thank you."
"So what happened?" Cissie asked, frowning.
"Before, or after?"
"You could just tell the whole story," Kon pointed out.
He yawned again. "I could. It's not that long. We were with the League of Assassins for a while, while I healed from the first attack by the Council of Spiders. While we were there, I put the virus into the computer system. When they attacked again, I ran the program to kick off the virus and blew up their system. Afterward, Ra's called me, and told me he was going after Wayne Enterprises. And that's when I left for home."
Cissie let out a low whistle. "He's going after Wayne Enterprises? That's--wait, who is 'we'?"
"Lucius Fox's daughter--Tam." He grimaced a little. "He sent her to find me when I dropped off the grid."
Cissie sighed and pinched her nose. "Does no one know how to use a phone anymore?"
Kon frowned. "Civilian or not, that's pretty damn cool. Besides the going after Wayne Enterprises thing. Shit, are you going to Gotham now?"
"If Dick needs me. I called him to let him know," he added, elbowing Cissie a little.
Cissie gave him a wry smile. "Before or after you got home? Because if it was before, I have to yell at him too."
"After. While you were in class."
She leaned over to kiss him. "I am sorry about that."
Kon grinned at them. "Aww, now everyone's back and happy!"
"Mmhm," Tim agreed. He dropped his head back and closed his eyes, hooking an arm through Kon's, and wrapping the other around Cissie. "And now everyone can sleep."
Cissie laughed and snuggled up against him, smiling over at Kon. "Yes, we're all very happy and sleepy. Good night, boys."
"'Night," Tim mumbled.
"I can go, if you want," Kon said. But he might disturb Tim. Eh, whatever. More comfy than the couch anyway. He sighed and smiled. "Night, guys."
