Starship Valkyrie

The Valkyrie LARP ran at Wyrdcon One, June 12th, 2010. I had worked on the game for many months prior to that date, and I was uncertain whether I would have enough players to run. I decided to prepare two scenarios - in the first, the ship would be run with a skeleton crew because of an accident in space, and then the second ( Read more... )

First of all, sir, you are a great golden god. I do not mind divulging that I have spent a fair bit of time contemplating running a game remarkably similar to "Starship Valkyrie", and in the end always discarded it as unworkable for a variety of reasons. You made it work, and I am filled with admiration (okay, and a tiny scrap of jealousy ( ... )

The science and engineering stuff sounds really interesting, and I'd love to know more about how it works. The sickbay seemed like kind of a waste of a player's time - it seemed like our doctor just sat there resetting a five-minute timer, so perhaps there ought to either be a mechanic that gives the medic something to do (e.g., instead of waiting for five minutes to elapse, the patient is healed when you beat this game of Minesweeper) or just find a way to automate that and not make a player babysit the sickbay at all.

Anyway, please don't be discouraged by any of these criticisms - overall the game was fabulous and this is nitpicking, I'm just trying to offer some constructive suggestions. If you want to run a campaign, I'm absolutely interested, and if you're seriously thinking about the corporate team-building thing I know a guy who works for these folks that I could put you in touch with.

Ian,

Thanks for your analysis. I feel like Valkyrie is a suit of clothes that needs to be fitted properly. It's a nice cut, and it looks nice, but it doesn't fit perfectly yet. I need to tighten things up here and loosen them there.

I would like to talk to your Go Game contact, but maybe not just yet. The game needs to be 'fixed' in some ways before I'd be ready to expose it to a critical outside view.

I think waiting on talking to my Go Game Guy is probably wise. I agree that Valkyrie needs to be tailored properly. There are things that should be different for a campaign than for a one-shot. (For instance, the fighter pilots' card game was perfect for a one-shot, but would probably need more depth if we were going to play it more than a couple of times.) Anyway, I look forward to seeing it refined and hope I'll have the opportunity to participate again!
