First thoughts about WOW

Though I thought the Beauty vs. Brawn side event, which pitted teams of nine men and women against each other, would've gone against the spirit of an all-women national event. In fact, the side event was approached with such an ironic sense of cutthroat passion that it was impossible not to laugh and enjoy the sense of community. The poetry was ( Read more... )

sounds like what I expected. and that's good.
why you hating on Detroit? a pit of what? 'cause I like pits of marshmallows. and swedish fishies.

I had karyna, tara, andrea and sonya in the final four. but I know how crummy it is to go early, or choose the wrong poem during these events.

Tara went first in finals and pwned everyone. It's the third time in indie finals history someone battled from the suicide seat to the final rotation.

Jaylee's writing motto is "Be Legendary." A lot of people did that this weekend, which was really all you can ask for.

I wonder how often great poems whiz by because I'm tuned in to the competition. Part of me thinks it's not often, but it'd be a shame if that was the case.

I think you're bang on about the shoe poem. Holy fuck. That shit was so rad.

And, I want Tara Hardy's babies.

Sonya told me (grinning) before the finals she wanted to make sure she got poetry on the DVD that isn't on any of the the others.

Karyna's shoe poem is one of my favorites, I have seen it maybe twice in Ann Arbor, but it was something else watching it on that stage. Amazing.

It was nice to see you so relaxed, Alvin.

I didn't have one serious discussion with a poet this tourney, which is a first since I started volunteering.

Detroit is filthy compared to Chicago, NY, or really any other large city. It is getting better, but progress is slow with the city so cash strapped. If Detroit gets this again next year, I'll bet it will be better. It was cleaner this year than last year.

Yeah, that's a weird new responsibility for poets, to not repeat poems from DVD to DVD. After Rives read Deaf Jam for like five straight events, it's become such a joke that people contort themselves to avoid it. There are a handful of people who've made three or more finals in the past few years, and it's impressive how few poems are repeating.
