Needlepoint, or canvas embroidery, was done in the late 16th century in England.

Or did you mean embroidery in general?

Crewel Embroidery. I think Stumpwork and Gilt embroidery with gold and silver threads.

P.S. Mary Queen of Scots is famous for her embroidery and I beleive there are some actual examples of her work in museums. Ribbon Embroidery if I'm not mistaken.
