Firstly, I AGAIN need to reiterate that I have ALL THE FICS part written for you, but life has meant I am the ~actual slackest at the moment when it comes to finishing anything. BUT THEY WILL ALL HAPPEN. THAT MUCH I CAN PROMISE YOU!

This is all the glorious things :)

[I have told you that I'm super glad we have this fandom in common right?!]

I love the steps that it goes through. The desperation, the fear, the begging, the bargaining, through to the beautiful ending. People often forget that grief can be applied to more than just the death of a person, that it's also something people go through when relationships and jobs and self-views end as well, and I think you've encapsulated that process so perfectly in this.

THANK YOU!!!!

You most certainly have, and you know it's reciprocated. I'm sorry your road trip was cut short by fires - sorry your state is experiencing fires, too. But I'm glad you're back!! I missed you!

This is all the glorious things :)
You know what? I was so uncertain about this, so I am very pleased you think so :) By the way, I got quite obsessed with Open Letter, had it on repeat everywhere for days!

I think, given that being a firefighter / on the rescue squad effectively defines Kelly for himself, grief will have to be part of his process on the show too. Even if there's some miraculous outcome and he gets to come back to work, he will have had to confront the possibility of it not working out. I'm really pleased you liked my take on it.

THANK YOU!

This is so fabulous (and remarkably much better than the actual episode, which I found to be rather underwhelming). I am now considering this to be all things canon. Because it is better. And therefore the truth. I love that you have Kelly initially thinking that he's got everything under control but finally realising that, actually, he's about as out of control as it gets. Love the little flashback parts and most of all the fact that it all comes back to a shitty father figure! Because poor broken bb Kelly is my favourite.

Loved this!

As usual.

I actually liked the episode. Well, maybe apart from Shay being critical one minute and sitting up talking the next. But that may be because (as a long time Grey's Anatomy devotee) I will take what I can get as far as character development goes, and the writers actually remembering that Kelly has a drug problem and a broken neck and continuing to address it counts as overwhelming with me, lol!

However,

I am now considering this to be all things canon. Because it is better. And therefore the truth.

Since I have your endorsement, me too! <3 I was satisfying myself, as I watched this get superseded, with the fact that I had Kelly in character regarding a) going cold turkey (although with less initial volition here) and b) the flowers for Shay (although, in my world, she'd have had a tropical rainforest in her room, not just a bunch ( ... )

I didn't dislike the episode, but I guess that I just wanted it to feel a little more organic and real. I mean, from significant head injury to a-okay in the space of an episode? I just felt that there was a lot of potential for drama that was squandered and it felt somewhat rushed to me. Which makes no sense, since I'm sure that by the time that they were filming this they knew that they had a full season pick up? Or maybe not. I do agree that the lack of need to retcon is surprisingly refreshing and perhaps I am being overly harsh. You are totally correct that it makes a pleasant change for the writers to remember what the hell is going on. Although, anyone else remember Andy ( ... )

That would have been wonderful.

Although, anyone else remember Andy?
VERY good point.

Kelly's dad is supposed to pay a visit
That's what I was referring to. I put together a couple of Kelly's lines and the description of their relationship and came up with a theory, which has been running through my fic once or twice. I'm excited for this too.
