... and I was lying about the macrame.
New icon and a quick draw of Fantasio, because I think he might be my favorite. Apparently I tend to gravitate towards characters who have either entirely too much hair, or almost no hair at all. Also, jerks who are buttmonkeys-- see also Dr. Venture.
Have I mentioned I really like the line quality on the default FireAlpaca brushes? Cuz I do.
I read a scanlation of "The Crypt of Champignac", and it was pretty much made of awesomesauce. A few unfortunate implications plotwise, but I do really like Tarrin’s art style (and comic-dynamic/Marcinelle school style in general! Aaah! Everything! So great!). Also, sphinxes <3
In other (still-related) news, the 2006 Spirou and Fantasio cartoon is kind of unfortunate. Neither the writing nor the pacing are very good (plot holes and idiot balls like you wouldn't believe!), the dubbed voices seem really stilted and rushed (lip sync problems?), and the art style isn't nearly as cute or dynamic as the comics (which is something that looks like it can be said about the series from the 90s as well). Man, I would love to see these guys animated on a bigger budget!
OK that's actually kind of adorable but you guys are not cool seriously
please stop trying so hard
Also, the villains are terrible. They're not very inspired in either their actual villainy or the execution of said villainy. The one-off evil scientists are the worst, but the reoccurring villains are pretty bad too: Zorglub has a snarky rollerskating robots and a poorly-realized eco-terrorist superiority complex (and terrible character design! What happened to you, evil Jigen? At least your daughter is cute). Zantafio didn't even wait until he had the upper hand to start stabbing people in the back, so methinks he has never heard of a little thing called subtlety. However, I will say his hipster makeover is pretty hilarious (er, well... maybe that's just me).
Original Flavor and Cool Ranch. Geez, look at that dork.
Actually, the ones with Champignac’s robot and the Yeti were not too horrible. They were what I might call “appropriately cartoony” (i.e. they didn’t even pretend to take themselves too seriously) and involved some good Fantasio moments, which is all right by me. Still, the characters and situations in general are pretty nonsensical and dumb, and not in a fun, over-the-top, enjoyable way. The end result is (mostly) just embarrassingly awkward and bland. Sad!
Evil scientist children tho-that one might have actually crossed the line into "yeah, OK, maybe that was sort of awesome" XD
