I saw Cumberbatch's Creature, but i'd wanted to see it the other way around so thanks for this. It's interesting to hear that you could see the rapist in JLM's Creature early on. That was one criticism I had of BC's Creature, that the rape felt like it rather came out of nowhere, and that it seemed very out-of-character for him. Though that may have been tinged by my own dislike of the rape, because of the fact I've studied this book and the rape doesn't happen in that, so I felt it was unneeded and OTT, but it would have been interesting to see if i'd felt differently had I seen JLM's Creature.
I'd suggest reading the book though; I think this was a great production but it does differ quite a lot in places to the text, sometimes for the better but sometimes, as with the rape, for the worse.
Oh, I didn't know you'd seen this! Thanks for your input on the different Creatures -- I agree that BC's Creature's rape of Elizabeth seemed to come from nowhere, though I'd love to re-examine his performance now for any hints of the later aggression.
I know, reading the book seems like the next logical step. I think after this production I might be disappointed in the lack of sympathy with the Creature? I thought that was one of the best things about the production, in some ways. But I'll have to see for myself what I think!
I actually felt more sympathy for the Creature when I read the book, but I guess also that my sympathies swapped back and forth between him and Victor a lot more when reading the text than they did while watching the production.
Also, in reference to the other comments here, I heard on Twitter, I fail to remember who from, that they are lining up a DVD release for later this year.
I got the book out of the library the other day, though it might take me a while to get around to it! I guess we didn't really see Victor's side of the story that well in the production, so that'll be another interesting thing about the book I suppose?
I see your point, but also, I'm sure there are more people than that alive who have once played Sherlock? WE SHOULD GET THEM ALL TOGETHER FOR A BIG SHERLOCK CONVENTION. AND THEN MAKE THEM ALL WEAR SCARVES AND COATS, JUST TO PISS OFF MOFFAT.
YES. AND WE SHOULD INCLUDE THE VOICE ARTIST FOR BASIL THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE TO REALLY RUB IT IN. I know there's a few still alive, but RDJ was the first that came to mind.
I'd love it if, given that they're Frankenstein chums, Cumberbatch started fanboying over Elementary in front of Moffat. It would be glorious.
(Still, Elementary's going to have a HELL of a time finding a Moriarty that I'll love as much as Andrew Scott. I hope they do. AND PLEASE BE A WOMAN. In fact, I'd love a female Moriarty and a male Irene Adler. Moffat's brain would EXPLODE.)
And then just some uppity Sherlock cosplayers (including lots of women!) all trying to out-Sherlock each other in the most outrageous ways possible. I actually really want that to happen.
I know, I hope BC is more awesome about Elementary than Moffat's been -- from what I recall having seen, he's been quite positive about it, so hopefully he's fighting its corner a bit. I would love Moffat to be confronted with his own awfulness by his lead actor. That would be amazing.
I'm really excited to see how they do Moriarty, given that Andrew Scott's performance is so very distinctive. Give us something different and unexpected, please, show! But actually for Irene I would love them to give us a more canon-compliant feminist-y adaptation of her story, so I can mentally overwrite it onto my memories of Moffat's clusterfuck of an Adler storyline.
Ooo this is great! It seems that JLM and BC's interpretations of both Victor and the Creature were quite different? Which is perhaps not unexpected but which is really interesting and intriguing and makes me wish more than ever that I could have gone to see the play (both versions of it).
This was a very interesting read! Thanks so much for taking the time to type up such a thoughtful review ♥
They definitely felt different, yes! Though, like I said in the post, my experience was impacted by the whole first time/second time viewing thing. But I would love there to be a DVD so that we could compare the two performances side-by-side.

If only RDJ had a part in it too, we could have had ALL THE SHERLOCKS.
