I'm really upset and disturbed by this unfolding story. I don't understand how 2 hours passed between the first shooting (with only 2 casualties) and the second shooting which killed more than 30. It is just horrifying. I hear what this journalist is saying, too, about how scripted tragedy has become for us as a society.

it's true. i'm really not experiencing this thing at all. I'm sick, busy, tired, and I don't know anybody affected. i was catching myself trying to act shocked on the phone with my mother because I know it's what she wanted to hear. it might be that doing social work has me too used up to feel any empathy outside my practice. Honestly I only have so much.

i hear you that we can only 'take in' so much each day. i'm definitely experiencing it, feeling newly disturbed with each article published, but at the expense of other feelings.

a friend sent me this link lately, making the point that while 32 deaths is a huge tragedy for the US, twice as many people were killed in Iraw the day before. http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/#50682

it's amazing what we can become numb too.
