HELP!

As this is something I have never shopped for before... I have no idea what so ever!

What section of the grocery store would I look for tofu in?

Thanks in advance from the shopping inept... :-)

It's usually in the refridgerated section of the vegetable aisle. You know, where you see the apple cider, cut-up fruit, and specialty juices. If it's not in that particualr one, check out all of the refridgerated shelves in that section. That's where I usually find it at Acme.

When I first moved into UD as a freshman, my mom took me grocery shopping. I was completely baffled at check-out. NO ONE was bagging the groceries! What kind of heathen place is this?!

Then I learned that most stores don't bag for you, and you have to take them out to the car too. I imagine it must be similar for people from NJ pumping their own gas for the first time.

See now the first time I was in Ukrop's I started bagging our stuff and my mother told me to stop.. I thought THAT was really odd....

A lot of the higher and mid level grocery stores also have health or natural foods sections. You could try there as well but don't bother if it's all dry goods and nothing in a cooler.

You could also just ask someone when you get the the store. :-)

Bah! Asking grocery store staff for help is a sign of weakness... That and I would be surprised if they knew what it was..

ali has it right, the produce section is the most common place at regular grocery stores. do you know what exactly you're looking for? firm, silken, extra firm?

There are different kinds?

I have a recipe that I found in one of my cookbooks that I want to try. It is a teriyaki tofu something or other (I don't remember the specifics... off the top of my head.) I guess that the recipe would probably tell me what I need, right?

If you're going to be frying it or some such, then I would suggest the firm. Silken has more water in it.

All the world should have Ukrop's!!

extra firm is what you'll be looking for. make sure you wrap it in a papertowel, then dishtowels (paper first to keep it from getting lint), and then put something heavy like a ceramic plate or cookbook on top of it for 15 min or so, to squeeze out excess moisture. it will help the tofu absorb more of the flavors from what you're making.

The hippie section.

Seriously, you'll find it in the produce aisle. They keep it there in Safeway and Super Giant stores at least.
