I'm tempted to say good on the rooster for dying heroically while defending his hens, but really, I'm a) just glad they didn't do more damage and b) most impressed by your self-restraint.
We broke it up before the dogs could do more damage. Later today, my neighbor found that the dogs had killed her favorite chicken, who was their best layer. So that's two chickens they killed.
You know, I can't really blame the dogs. Labs are sport dogs. That's what they're bred to do. And when the chickens ran, which I'm sure they did, the dogs probably thought, 'wow, great sport.' Bottom line: Their owners should have kept them on a tighter leash. It's the owners' fault, not the dogs.
If the owners recover the dogs from the pound, they will have to pay a fine to get them back. I hope that teaches them a lesson.
