Anybody out there have an opinion on whether I should get the Mossberg 500 combo or the Remington 870 combo? I was heading in the direction of the Remington, but saw a nice Mossberg today at a great price that includes the scope. On the gun forums, it seems pretty much split down the middle with no one really saying the other is no good.

You'd be fine with either; 870s have a slight edge in terms of solidity, Mossys have the better ergonomics. Love my 870s, but if my FLGS had been a Mossberg dealer instead I'd be loving my 500s.

Yeah, that's what I figure. I'll probably just get the Mossberg since the price is much, much better than the Remington.

It's hard to go wrong with a Mossy. I fell in love with the very first one I handled; after hefting and shouldering it I knew that there was a pump-12 in my life :). And their tang safety rocks. So which model exactly are you contemplating?

I'm not sure exactly. There were two at the local gunshop. Both were combos that came with a 12-gauge barrel and a rifled barrel for slugs, which we have to use for deer hunting around here. One was used and came with a sight, too. It was in great shape, and the price was great, too. I'll head back and check them out again if they're still there.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the 870 at Bass Pro, but my local gunshop had two 500s for sale. I thought about the 870, but I'd much rather support my local shop than the bigbox corporate store, so I think I'll be getting a 500 if it's still there.
