Even though the season actually started last week, today was my first day out for early season Canada goose hunting.
Yesterday afternoon, I had spent about four hours clearing a portion of my neighbor's field where I also deer hunt. I drove the tractor on the road about four miles to get there, and then spent the next few hours cutting walking paths and a large area in the middle to see if I can land some geese. It only took me about 40 minutes to drive the 4 miles, but it was a beautiful drive. I thought about getting my neighbor to take the tractor over on his large trailer, since I was keeping up his property. But who doesn't love a nice drive on a tractor through the countryside in the fall? People are so used to seeing tractors on the road around here that most were courteous and waved at me as they passed.
As for this morning, I'm back already because I got soaked from a large rain storm that came through. I just wasn't fully prepared for the rain, even though I saw that it was on its way.
The truth is I haven't seen any geese flying around here yet anyway. It's been pretty warm, though the last few days we've had a nice wind blowing out of the north, which is bringing some cooler temperatures.
I should probably see about getting my neighbor to dig me a small pond with his backhoe to pull in some geese. That would work great. We can always fill it back in when we're done. There is a spring that can be used to feed the pond with water if I go that route.
I'm not unhappy about having to come in early this morning. If the weather is better this afternoon, I can always head out then. There is also tomorrow, too. Whatever happens, even a bad day in the woods is better than the best day at work.
