I'm sure many do, but of course the exercise gets staged so as to make sure the students can advise the one who doesn't. :-) This hypothetical backyard farmer hadn't planned her pregnancy, and in the past her immune system had always been up to the challenges she presented it, so she hadn't really thought much about husbandry, handling, etc. So quite rightly she went to her physician to ask for advice, and heyla! she got some. :-)
I loved watching the client actress make agonized expressions whenever she was told about any kind of restriction or precaution. That's real life; people don't WANT to cook their food, people don't always WANT to wash their hands (though many won't admit that bit), people don't WANT to wear gloves, people don't WANT to be extra careful while the fetal immune system is booting up. It's no fun.
The poor student who was assigned to talk to her was clearly trying to work with her a bit, but it seemed to be rough going for him when she wasn't too happy. And we vet students were probably a bit too bloodthirsty when describing all the lovely kinds of parasites and bacterial infections she could be exposing herself to... we'd just spent MONTHS on them, including case reports of deaths, so we were pretty keyed up about it all.
Yeah. Or ANY kind of planning. :) The fun thing about these scenarios is they'll set up the least-informed "client" possible so the students have to explain things properly.
