Probably a wise choice. I did get that degree, but already had a job (teaching English at a community college). What was going to be your subfield?

Sociolinguistics. It's the language and gender stuff that I'm most interested in.

Hoping to get the teaching at a community college type of job this upcoming year. Or something. I've got an MA in TESOL, and tons of experience teaching writing.

Sorry to hear that. I know you've already put a lot of work into your thesis research. Its hard to put a lot of effort and time into something and then have to admit that its no longer a path that works for you. Still, it often is better to have the wherewithall to make a change when you come to that realization than try to continue following a path that is no longer for you. Avoids a lot of unnecessary frustration. You've got the kind of experience that gives you options and this is a good thing. Hopefully where-ever you land will work better for you.
