Home ownership

So ,  I've got this house ..  I always thought owning a house would be about having everything done, all the loose ends tied up , and everything just right.  I have discovered that in reality, much like the rest of this thing we call "adulthood" it's not about what you get done but what can be put off.   Money , time, energy . All of these things ( Read more... )

Sounds like you guys are making progress. We just make lists of what we want to do and then we realize that we can't afford to do it. So all our projects are on hold until we can afford them. It is true, though, you really do put things off until they break. For us, it was the hot water heater last summer. Then we had squirrels in the roof this spring, so we had to get someone to trap them and then do the repairs to the roof. It never seems to end.

Still, it is better than renting and there is something satisfying about finishing a project.

I'm giving serious thought to a permanent fire pit in the back yard. I need something else to make the neighbors uneasy. The dragons on the front porch aren't doing the trick any more.

This is true, but at least you're building equity as opposed to just chucking the money away...

I would have whole heartedly agreed with you three years ago. We now however owe more than we could hope to sell for. At least for now. Theoretically the equity will come back , it's just a matter of how long is it going to take.

It never stops. We're also on the plumbing fixtures and faucet replacement rotation - we did the master toilet kit last winter, the tub controls earlier this summer, followed the next weekend by the sink faucet (which died midweek in a fashion that required turning both the hot and cold water on and off via the master shut-off valves under the vanity). The kitchen sink fixtures are on the list to do in the couple of weeks before we have a similar failure there. This isn't counting last summer's very costly replacement of the well pump ( ... )

After saving and deferring, we're finally finishing the basement. However, there will be other repairs and such as we go. They do tend to suck up the money, those houses.
