something
the boy woke up from a dream about turtles driving around in yellow trucks, and heard a noise from the living room. he quickly got out of bed, clutching the plush dinosaur close to his torso. the house was dark as he padded into the living room.
the noise came from the television, its light blinding the boy's sleepy eyes, and the couch was empty.
weird. the television was only on when his dad was sitting on the couch, or in the mornings when the boy sat cross-legged in front of it, watching the brightly coloured creatures jump around on the screen.
but it was night, not morning. the couch was empty.
why was the television on?
daddy must be invisible, the boy thought, and his eyes were suddenly brimmed with tears. i will never see daddy again.
he ran into his parents' bedroom, jumping on the bed and crying and screaming.
"mommy, daddy is invisible!"
his mom switched on the bedside lamp, and groggily watched her son hug his stuffed dinosaur in agony. "what are you talking about, honey?"
"daddy is invisible, he is gone! the tv is on, but he isn't there!"
she smiled at him, poking the lump beside her. "you forgot to turn off the tv, do it now."
her voice was sweet and sleepy.
"forgot," the lump grunted and started moving. he rolled out of bed, dragging his feet behind him as he left the room.
the boy sat on the bed and watched his back with big, tearful eyes.
"mommy, was that daddy?"
"of course, who else could it be?"
"but i can see him."
"yeah..." she sighed and lay down again. "go check on him so he hasn't fallen asleep on the couch."
the boy jumped down from the bed and ran after his dad into the living room.
"daddy! daddy! the tv is on but it's not morning and you're not sitting on the couch, why is it on? how can this be!"
his dad looked at him, wrinkling his whole face in confusion, then sighed.
"i forgot to turn it off. now go to bed, tiger, it's late."
the boy beamed at him. "i can see you!"
he turned around and ran into his own bedroom, climbing into bed and pulling up the covers.
"the television is on in the mornings, when daddy is sitting on the couch and when daddy forgets to turn the television off," the boy told the dinosaur. "daddy is not invisible."
he fell fast asleep with a content smile on his face.
