You lost me at "I don't consider Punk to be a valid form of music". The pretentiousness it takes for someone to say a whole genre isn't "valid" makes me not care about anything else you have to say.

Check out punkistani, who's bassist for the Kominas. He's got some excellent articles on what's been going on in Pakistan.

And the whole Taqwacore thing, as far as I'm concerned, is both bringing punk back to the force it was in the Old Days (before it became one among many teen fashion choices) and almost serving as a potential source for much-needed reform in Islamic culture.

Also, regarding the validity of punk, check out the Bad Brains. Slightly creepy politics but huuuuge musicianship (they played Mahavishnu-style fusion before becoming a punk band.)
