Never visit Zingerman's Bakehouse when you're hungry. I went there on my way home today to find a cake for a Christmas dessert (I settled on a Buche de Noel) and also ended up buying a pan of cinnamon rolls, an over-the-moon pie (sort-of an expensive Ding Dong - $4 each), and a tin of their "Fancy Schmancy" cookies for my Grandmother. Wow, I've never seen a can split like that either! I occasionally put Diet Coke cans in the freezer to get them cold faster. Even more occasionally, I forget I have done so, adn all I have ever had happen is they bulge out at the top and bottom. (And are all flat when they thaw out, alas).

I do hope you do not need to go in tomorrow.

Love the title of your post...I may borrow it if I do my travel rant. (I am holding off in case my airline does really stupid things on the return trip, too...)

That bakery sounds lovely. We baked and decorated gingerbread cookies today with my kids and the cousins (and then each ate one...yummy!)

I've had cans actually explode before, but it was just the regular opening that came open, which makes sense because that should be a weak point in the can...

Fortunately, I didn't have to go in to work. The resident actually did his work and I was able to sign the summaries online from home. :)

Feel free to use this title for a post on your travel woes. (I obviously didn't make it up.) I hope things go more smoothly on the way home, though!

Oh my gosh - I didn't know cokes would explode like that when totally frozen, either! That could have been a huge mess.

I hope you can save your day off and not have to drive through another blizzard!

Unfortunately, I have had some 'sploded cokes in the past. Nothing will turn them into ballistic missiles like leaving them in the trunk in the winter:( This winter is so dreadfully cold already, it's making me cranky. Real buttercream could make me less cranky though. I have to agree, mmmmmmmmm yum.

This weekend, I shall clean my garage. And then after trash day next Tuesday, I shall put my car in my garage. And then Wednesday morning, I won't have to scrape my car.

This was even more fun back in the days of glass bottles. Great fun, cleaning shards out of the freezer.

That was about the time that I decided I liked my pop warm, thankyouverymuch.

Wow! I'm surprised that glass bottles would explode! Since the glass seems so thick, I wouldn't think that the pressure inside the bottle could be high enough to shatter it.

I don't recommend trying the experiment :-)

Ice can shatter concrete, glass is not a problem.

Well, that's true. But, concrete is more porous than glass and is more susceptible with cracks, so freezing water can push it apart...

Yeah, I've seen them split like that, too. I think cans are of cheaper, thinner material than they used to be. Good for the environment, but sure makes a display when bursting!

Glad to hear that resident is finally getting his butt in gear.

What's a buche de noel?

It's a French Yule log cake. Essentially, it's a white thin sponge caked, rolled like a jelly roll with rum buttercream and covered with chocolate frosting to look like a log. I made one once for French class in junior high. I made marks in the frosting to imitate bark and put green spearmint-flavored leaf jellies on it along with those little red cinnamon candies to imitate holly. This is what Zingerman's Buche de Noel looks like, though. They have mushrooms and holly (made out of fondut, I think). Theirs is also covered with a layer of very course white sugar to look like snow/ice.
