In order to save Claire, himself and the world from endless suffering Future!Peter decides it is best to have the Haitian erase Claire’s memories of the Petrelli family while Angela feeds his past self the lie of how his niece died during the eclipse. Of course Present!Peter blames his father - and sets out to stop him for good.
It seemed like every word, every breath and every passing moment brought new memories of Claire. He remembered the way her hair had smelled when she had bumped into him in that hallway in Odessa; how she had ever so nervously tapped the doorframe of his cell while telling him he was her hero and how he had seen the fear and the pain in her eyes when he had begged her to shoot him. He could still recall how he had felt, when he had come back to life to the sight of her face; streaked with tears but smiling. Peter could picture every single moment spent with her - every secret glance, every innocent touch and every smile - so explicit and so vividly that he felt like hours had passed since he had stepped into this office to stop his father.
The Haitian growled in pain beside him and the next moment he could feel his father ripping at the seams of his mind, tearing the images from him in an infuriated attempt to gain control over his son’s body. Peter gritted his teeth, tightening his hold on the gun. He could see the look on his father’s face change from anger to surprise, then slowly to understanding before - and Peter hated himself for the pang he felt at this - turning to one of sheer and utter disgust at this whirlwind of affection, guilt and… lust?
“She was your brother’s daughter…” Arthur spat. “You are the monster.”
Peter pulled the trigger.
