I'm participating in a research study about nurses and sleep/wake cycles. It sounds really neat, I can't wait to see the final results

No, that's not the case. There are many functions of sleep and dreaming, and they aren't all understood yet. Some people think that dreams help your mind sort through all the information from the day. But it is definitely known that you need to sleep to have good mental function. Lack of sleep has been shown to cause the same effects on mental and physical function as being drunk. Yikes!
I read about one study where they tested cats. They woke up the cats every time they started going into REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It became harder and harder to keep the cats awake, and keep them from slipping into REM sleep. So there must be something very important about sleep, that the brain needs it.
Was browsing and thought this was interesting. I am a night nurse on a neurosurgical/ENT/neuro/Acute Stroke unit. I think that working nights is literally making me sick. What did this study conclude??
Also, if you would like to add me, I'd be happy to read the "real stuff" you post. *smile*
I'm also interested in changing areas of the hospital... leaning towards ICU since I did my precepting as a student in the ICU and loved it... but ED has caught my fancy as well as a cath lab position. What do you think of the ICU?
