This was definitely worth going back a few days on LJ to see your beautiful flowers *squees*
I'm so curious to know where you live, I planted just about the exact same plants this spring and while mine was beautiful back in late May and early June, the God awful southern heat has them all dead by this time of year. The only thing I have that had stuck it out is my rudebekia and Russian sage. Of course by the end of August I'm sick of watering the damn things so that does have a bit to do with it.
I had the same problem as you, but with Oak tree roots. I finally just carried in loads of dirt and built it up a bit. My Hostas went mad, they were huge this year. I think they love the shade the oak tree gives them.
The best luck in planting I have is Hydrangeas. I love them, I find it almost impossible to kill those bastards.
Sorry I get so excited and tend to ramble when it comes to flowers *G* Hope I haven't bored you to tears :)
I live in Michigan, hot and humid during the summer but nothing compared to Alabama heat.
I'm with you with regards to watering. I'm ready to give it up now, but I'm having a big family dinner at the end of September, so the plants need to look good at least until that time. After that, they can wither away because it will make the house look creepy and careworn for Halloween.
After you mentioned adding more topsoil, I've been thinking that might be a good solution to my problem area. The timing would be best when I redesign the area, which I'd like to do in the next few years.
I get excited about the flowers too. Can you tell. ;)
