Isn't it strange how four years seems to go so quickly, and yet so slowly at the same time? Been thinking of you xx

Yes, indeed it is. I was only thinking of you today. Hope you're well and thriving, and, in the way only the bereaved can mean it, ok.

"The human mind is a very strange thing" CG

I'm not sure whether the mind is strange, or whether people are strange, or whether the world is strange, or the lot. Where is the blame to be put?

At the moment, I'm alternating - rapidly and quite alarmingly - between pervasive depression about my personal and professional future, and momentary bouts of confidence, in which hope emerges from the shadows; it's just that it's back in Durham, the littlest university in the world. Arg!

Keith Ansell-Pearson (see Warwick philosophy) might be our new professor. He's very friendly, and a dude. I need Prof Cooper to stay, or else I'm buggered. I don't want to be buggered. I spend too long sitting on my arse.

I'm getting apprehensive myself about the future. It all started last night when my boyfriend told me that he'd "wait" for me when I returned to uni. The last thing I want to do is be ungrateful because that's a lovely gesture, but really, what am I supposed to do with that information? Clearly he thinks we have a long-term future. I'm not too sure, precisely because in six months' time I will be returning to Durham, and I have no way of knowing what will happen from there on in.

His offer to wait is a weight on your mind, which is something you mind. Despite being a fatalist, I think your future is your own ...
