Luna Lovegood~

Friendly little gnome

”You kind of look like a friend of mine,” Luna whispered to the little garden gnome that had made its home in the garden just outside the Lovegood residence. Luna found the situation quite unique because the gnomes that had lived there some years ago had left under one of her dads open wars against the Blibbering Humdinger. So, when Luna saw one morning that one gnome had returned to live just underneath the lemon three she run over to welcome him with a pitcher of turnip juice.  Their conversation did however come to a halt when the little gnome with a long beard took a big chomp of her finger. She smiled brightly; surely the gnome was under the athe-curse and couldn’t help himself. Luna sucked her finger thoughtfully while filling a thimble with freshly squeezed turnip juice picking up the conversation in a dreamy voice:

“Yes, you look just like him,” she said giving the gnome the newly filled thimble. “Harry Potter is his name, have you heard of him?” The gnome, holding the thimble in two chubby little hands snarled in response which, weird enough, had a positive effect on Luna. “Poor little thing! The athe-cruse isn’t an easy thing to cope with,” she smiled brightly ignoring the hisses emitting from the gnome as he tasted the yellow, thick juice. “My dad had it last year and he kept throwing all his books and magazines all over the house, which was a very bad thing considering I was supposed to do the cleaning that week.”

The gnome threw the thimble away drying his mouth; showing his little yellow teeth. Luna however seemed to be momentarily lost in thoughts about the athe-curse. Suddenly as if she had just remembered she noticed that the little gnome had vanished inside his little house. She tried to peek inside the house, made up of a hollowed out mushroom, and saw that the gnome was trying to nail the doorway shut with some branches. She scowled.

“Are you angry?” she asked bending closer to the white and red mushroom. “Of course you are angry, curse and everything, but that is not a reason to shut yourself out from the world!” The gnome however did not listen and soon all Luna could see was a wall made out of neatly cut lemon three branches.  “You see, my friends, well people at school, don’t tend to visit me in the summer holidays so I become quite lonely,” she poked her finger at the sealed doorway. “I have my dad of course, he is always around, but still, pretending to have friends at Hogwarts is so much easier than pretending to have friends here.”

The constant poking at the branches made them shatter and the gnome went for another bite. This time, however, Luna was too quick and snatched her hand back giggling. “Let’s be friends she exclaimed happy,” looking at the gnome trying to save what was left of his door. “You don’t have to be my ‘real’ friend, it’s ok to pretend. You don’t even have to listen to me! All the people back at Hogwarts thinks that I am crazy anyway,” she said as a matter of fact and lifted the gnome up and lay him in her lap. “I know exactly what you need!” the gnome tried to wriggle its way out but Luna poked him in place with her wand to escape the snarling fangs. “My dad always said that if you catch the athe-curse you have no other choice than to eat a lot of mashed dragon claws, but since that is kind of forbidden you’ll have to make do with a new pitcher of turnip juice!”

And this is why no gnome today lives in Lovegood’s garden and why Luna spent all of her summer quite alone in her room.
