Breastfeeding Icon Drama

I fail to see the issue with an icon depicting a baby breastfeeding.  All of the images I have seen have been tasteful and in some the only reason you know the baby is being fed is that a T shirt or top is bunched up above, there is no more boob being shown than that.  I cannot see how parents would think of this as an inappropriate display of ( Read more... )

I don't think it was the breastfeeding-in-action icon that caused the problem. I think it have been the one labelled "from Obsessive Icons, NIP" on this page http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=cali4niachef which shows a naked woman's torso (no baby) with some text about breastfeeding.

That was not my understanding from the debate I have seen and also from others who have had warnings about bf in action.

Can anyone confirm one way or another ?

I could be wrong, but this is the thread that made me suspicious. See this thread, particulary the second-to-last comment by gentlemaitresse.

It's true that cali4niachef says it was the "this icon" and is using the breastfeeding icon, but if she wrote that using her default icon before she changed it, then the picture with the comment may have changed when her default icon changed. We'll know on the 23rd, I suppose.

Certainly, I can't see any nipple or areola in the breastfeeding icon, and that's usually the judge of whether too much breast is exposed.

On the other hand, LiveJournal has reportedly said they can limit breastfeeding default icons, so maybe it was the breastfeeding one that caused the trouble....so perhaps I'm giving LiveJournal icon-decider folk too much credit for being sane.

I'm afraid you are. :) LJ changed the wording of the rules half way through. The rules said graphic sexual and violent default userpics were not allowed. Then they told some breastfeeding moms their breastfeeding userpics weren't allowed as defaults. People replied that breastfeeding isn't sexual, so they changed the rule to nudity. They had a choice there, they could have said "Sorry, our bad" or they could have said "Ok, we'll change the rules so our decision looks reasonable" and they went with the latter. No wonder people are mad!

yes! you answered them. thanks so much. im aware of the logistics of home birth, i think what im up against right now is a psychological issue regarding fearing the pain, but that is inevitable! and i know i was lucky the first time around to be spared interventions, i dont want to risk it this time. good to hear your second labor went well, even though you didnt birth in the tub! im definitely sticking with home birth, i just need to mentally let my fears go.

thanks again. :)
