So, in the 14 years I've lived here, we've gotten direct hits by two, count 'em TWO hurricanes... and only one was still a hurricane when it hit us (and that was only two weeks ago ( Read more... )

Umm, according to weather.com Frances is projected to hit N. and S. Carolina- not us. Of course, if it turns left- goodbye Charley, hello Frances.

Everyone thinks we get hit by hurricanes ALL the time... we don't. We get STORMS all the time... but not hurricanes. I don't want to get hit by TWO in one season when at this time I've been hit by two EVER.

I don't think you get them all the time, I think you get them on an annual basis, which is still way too much in my opinion. Give me California earthquakes anyday over Florida hurricanes. So long as your house is well built and not on a sand dune, it's not going to get damaged by an earthquake.

Again, twice in 14 years... not even remotely annually.

Okay, I've been paying enough attention to the news to say that I know Florida has gotten more hurricanes than that. Maybe not every year, but it's more than twice every fourteen years. You're right, it's rare to have two big ones at the same time, and I'm not saying that all the hurricanes are big, but that you do have hurricanes on a fairly regular basis. Maybe it's just every other year or so, and maybe most of them are just category one or two so they don't get much media attention, but it's definitely more than twice in fourteen years.

This causes a whole new problem if we get hit by another major storm. Now there are plenty of ready projectiles lining our streets, conveniently chopped into small pieces and positioned to be launched by gusting winds, treating your home like a pin cushion.
