It's time to set the wasp free. It's what we were always taught to do. I did, and I've never felt better.
The Sarah I know would probably be happier with the Santa Barbara job. And also, I think you're forgetting - you can change your mind! The opportunity in DC may not be the same, but there will still be jobs. You'll make the biggest, best impact where you are happiest. I, personally, hope to move out to the west coast in a couple of years, probably after grad school. I love it out there.
It's hard. And it's made harder by the fact that I'm really past the point where I should be jumping jobs. And the fact that the two policy areas are so different - if I stay, I'm committing to coastal policy. If I go, energy/global warming. And once I've gone down one road - once I've done coastal policy for like 5 years or whatever, it's gonna be damn hard to convince someone that I'm their girl for air pollution, or whatever. I know it sounds somewhat unlikely, given the generally low pay and lack of glamour, but the environmental field is actually extremely competitive right now.
also, if you hate the job in DC if/when you take it, you can always look for others. This doesn't have to be permanent, it just has to be now. Take smaller bites, it'll be easier to chew.
