I'm pretty out of touch as far as the Target novels are concerned, so I'm afraid I can't really comment on this one.

I haven't watched this one yet, but I've read the novelization a couple of weeks back. From what I've heard, it's better to experience the Vardans this way.

K-9. BAD DOG. YOU DO NOT TALK TO SEXY LIKE THAT.
Heh, reminds me of the day I showed The Doctor's Wife to the twins. Afterwards, they asked me if they could rewatch some Eccleston, and when they got to Aliens of London and Nine discovered they had travelled 12 months rather than 12 hours one of them stood up and shouted, "BAD SEXY!"

Huh. I didn't know they had British quarries on Gallifrey.
Gallifrey *is* one massive British quarry.

Aww, K-9's only your second best friend, Doctor?
The first one is called Sarah Jane Smith (Jamie doesn't count because he's the Doctor's best... well, you know :P). K9 accepts that since he'll be her second best friend too. He's number one in Leela's heart, though.

For most of this, Castellan has had One Of Those Faces I Can't Place and his actor's name looks familiar...
He was Benik in The Enemy of the World and Guy Crayford (AKA Eyepatch ( ... )

How were the Vardans described in the Target novel? Probably better than "shimmering sheets of tin foil," I imagine.

Now that I think about it, yeah, you're probably right. Except I don't think they have red grass and silver leaves in British quarries.

One of the only things I remember about the Big Finish audio Neverland is Eight introducing Charley and Romana to each other as "my best ever friend" and "my best friend ever." So I guess any companion can be the Doctor's Best Friend at any given time. Or something.

BENIK! Yes, that's where I've seen him before! Also, now that I stop and think about it, he also kinda looks like Caven from The Space Pirates. I was waiting for his actor blurb to show up on the InfoText to see what it said, but it didn't mention any other Who appearances (at least not in that portion of the text) so I figured I was just seeing things.

Here's how Uncle Terrance describes the Vardans at their tin foil stage:The strange thing about the Vardans was that they weren't quite there. It was as if they existed in some other dimension, some other reality. The astonished High Council saw three tall, shimmering shapes, cloaked and hooded figures with the vaguest hint of features under the hoods. But somehow it was impossible to get a really good look at the Vardans. Something about them turned away the eyes.

They can, definitely. I was joking in my previous comment, but Jamie is a good example, not to mention that EDA!Eight also described both Sam and Fitz as his best friend on separate occasions, and Ten also described Donna as his best friend in End of Time - much to the Master's annoyance, judging from his reaction.

Oh my god, the Vardans are Headless Monks o___o

I just had my first exposure to Sam in More Short Trips this week. She seemed okay, but I understand she'd kind of unpopular in some sections of the fandom.

...and I'm paraphrasing here, that the Vardans are the only baddies to ever be defeated by the intellectual 'might' of the Sontarans.

Also, thanks for that vid, of the Doctor being a BAMF.

Ah yes, the Tumblrfolk like to use that video whenever someone calls the Doctor a pacifist or says that "he'd never use guns."

I think I am rendered physically incapable of taking this scene seriously whenever that music plays. What is that, anyway, a pipe organ?

I mean, normally pipe organs are awesome, but this is a Space Pipe Organ that's having a bad day and is drowning its sorrows in coffee.

Based on The Deadly Assassin, I think that music is supposed to be actually playing in the scene (and I think pipe organ music turns up in the Gallifrey audios during Important Time Lord Stuff as well).

I really need to listen to the Gallifrey audios one of these days, because an entire series starring Romana AND Leela? YES PLEASE. Also, the guy who plays Brax is now on Tumblr and it's been getting my Gallifrey-fan friends in a state of glee.

I was VERY impressed by the tension and mystery of the first few episodes of this and it saddens me that it didn't really last the whole story through. Oh well...

All I really know about No Future is what Paul Cornell wrote about it in his online preface to the e-book of Human Nature (which, sadly, was taken down from the BBC website sometime last year for budget reasons.) Apparently it's not one of his favorites since, as he put it, he was trying to write "the ultimate Doctor Who story" and found himself overloading it with way too much stuff. Part of the reason he decided to write Human Nature was so he could go back to writing a smaller, more personal story.
