please talk to me about good digital cameras under $1000 (ideally under $500 but if it's like earthmoving i'll charge the hell out of it). i am favoring canon or nikon. is this wrong?

do you want an SLR? you can get a nikon D50 or D40 for pretty cheap these days (around $500 if you can find a deal), and the 8mp version of the Rebel for about $500. Having had both a Canon and a Nikon SLRs I slightly prefer the Nikon, but Canon is great, too. have you checked out dpreview.com?

also for non-sketchy refurbished or discount camera places I suggest Cameta Camera (I might be misspelling). they have a huge ebay store and they are non-sketchy the way beachcamera and other places are.

i have a circuit city credit account and i think i want to spend it on a camera since i paid off the tv. my little panasonic/leica is fun for parties but i'm getting more into fashion and actual photography. what is the difference between SLR and non? i am really kind of stupid with this stuff considering i'm an editor

Oh, and the principal difference is one of image quality.

Depends on what you are shooting. If it's not fast-moving sporty stuff or telescopic you'd probably do well with the Nikon D40.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SDPMEI/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2TM1EW0QN26FQ&colid=176IGZ87EPBQG

It goes on sale fairly often.

I really like my Canon PowerShot A630. It's perfect for the casual kind of photos I take.

It's in the $300 range, I dunno there's probably a newer latest greatest model, but the A630 has a better lens than some of the more expensive ones with more fancy features. Be sure to pick up a usb card reader with it...so convenient and cheap.

i have a panasonic dmc-fx9 for party pics and whatnot (and yes, card readers just CHANGED MAH LIFE) but i think i want something that will take nicer pics, you know, better w/ light and whatnot. my friend sunny has the rebel but i think hers was like $2K or something stupid. i love flickr's feature where you can compare shots by each camera but i also love lj testimonies!!

Yeah, the low light sensitivity could use improvement and I would have liked the image stabilization in the more espensive models. I do like the swivel-fold screen dealie though. Someday I should read the manual.

Lemme ask Raul, he's my go-to guy on this stuff. Film cameras, I could help you out, but digital/SLR, I am poor & clueless.

You could also look at specialty camera shops for used SLRs -- here in D.C. we have Penn Camera, where, like, the White House photogs sell back stuff. They always have nice, barely-used lenses and things for (comparably) cheap. Photogs never keep anything long and are always trading up but I guess the flipside of that is that they're hard on their gear. Anyway -- Raul. He will help.

I have a Nikon coolpix S10 and I think it is super awesome. I am not ms. talented or anything, but it does take pictures that don't suck, and I like the "whoa over your head" twisty option.

It was a present, but I think it was like $250 at Costplus.

COSTCO, I mean. It was not nestled among the Indian fabrics and incense sticks.

What UK trip, my sweet?
