dubious consent

Have you ever seen the phrase 'dubious consent' outside fandom ever? Because I just came across an ebook through the library where the description just screams fandom- seriously, it's an A/B/O AU. Which are all basically original fiction anyway, so it wouldn't be a stretch to adapt it, since a great many of those kind of AUs, especially in the RPF ( Read more... )

Yeah, that definitely screams fanfic. And no, I've never seen the term "dubious consent" outside of fandom.

It sometimes seems that creators outside fandom can't conceptualise consent as something that might be dubious. (OTOH, it sometimes seems that creators inside fandom can't conceptualise non-con as something they are writing.)

Yeaaah, that kinda sounds like something that had the numbers filed off. And I've never encountered that phrase out there in the wild either.

Exactly. The only reason I didn't use that exact phrase is because of the general weird relationship of those kind of AUs to canon. Especially when you get into RPF. They're basically original fiction, except not exactly, because they adhere so closely to meta-fandom character archetypes.

Yeah, sounds like an a/b/o fanfic without the a/b/o named as such, as well as names changed.
