Plastic Bag Tote

Jun 08, 2008 13:06

So I finished the bag made from plastic grocery bags.
It was an interesting project.
Took about 40 bags altogether.
Not sure I'll do it again; we'll see how useful this tote really is.

I used THIS pattern.
It came out smaller than her pattern says, and I even used an N hook instead of an M.
It's about 13 inches wide.

Thanks for the pictures, luv. I had mamma joyce get me an M hook but knowing what I know from your work, I suspect what I'll do is make it to the length I want and follow the directions from there. Nice work!

I crochet TIGHT. So if something has to follow a gauge I always have to bump up at least one hook size.
I also suspect today's grocery bags are thinner than what she used --- note that her pattern is copyrighted 2001. I cut mine to 1.5 inch widths. If you cut to 2 inch widths, you'll have thicker strands.
I must admit the worst part was stranding the bags together. I did 5-10 at a time, then crocheted for a while, then did more stranding. But it was tedious.

The bag is pretty sturdy though. It'll make a good toy bag or "green bag" for the grocery store, I think.

That's 5-10 grocery bags sliced and stranded.
Not 5-10 strands.

Gotcha. And I don't crochet as tight as you, I think. Would you do anything differently if you were to decide to do it again?

Cool Fred! I think that would probably make a good "beach toy bag" too! I'm always looking for ones that water and sand will fall out of. :-)

Neat! As soon as I get good pictures I'll post the bags my Mom made. She used a different type of yarn than usual and it turned out LOVELY. Now she never asks for bags at the store!

She made one for Una who uses it for a work purse (because it is pretty cute) and people at her work are constantly asking where she got it. If only everyone could crochet!
