I let myself get talked into these things....

So as mentioned previously, I'm working on the new more historic faire that will be in Sebastopol in September. What I'm also working on is the costuming manifesto for the lower/middle/merchant classes - which is an amazingly fun project in itself and I am thrilled to be working to improve something I love so much ( Read more... )

The phrase "herding cats" leaps to mind. ;-)

If you give me a smidge more info for general time/place, I'll see what I have. I was planning to organize my picture files soon anyway.

It is ABSOLUTELY herding cats and luckily I have a theatrical production background to use with this as well as 20+ years of history and faire experience. But still...

So we're looking 1550s/60s - my main references to get the costuming ideal across are Tudor Tailor, examples of folks from Kentwell, Brueghel, Pieter Artsen's Market Scene painting, and Fete at Bermondsey.

oh and we're English - all of us (again, another new concept of an all-English village)

This is also going to be the standard for the Villagers group that will be working with St. George at other events. So this is more than just this 1 faire.

femkederoas, in case you aren't familiar with St. George, they work the CA ren circuit as nobles. http://guildofstgeorge.com/ They work hard to elevate their standards and to perform as historical an interpretation as possible of Elizabeth and her court.

As I suggested in my Tribe.net post, it may be useful to clearly differentiate between each of the statuses you mentioned.

Use that as your initial basis and work from there.

On Children, there is a couple of LJ groups that collects those images, although they are from different time frames. Let me see if I can collect images of the right time frame for you. But be warned, those images of kids are rare compared to adults.

And while it is Flemish... there are images of kids playing in the streets by Pieter Brughel (the elder, I think) c. 1560-70s, iirc. You can find them on wikimedia commons, but they keep reorging his stuff so it takes a bit of digging to find. I have a big book on Brughel that I can scan clearer images of most his stuff but it will take some time.

The two LJ groups have tagged their entries, so it is easier to find what you need. Here's the two using 16th century.

You might find both have a number of overlapping items, as a few folks that post do so on both groups.

The big problem I am finding is some links are no longer around. The other is that a century is rather broad when trying to focus on a certain area and time frame. But I've seen images on these groups that I've otherwise would have passed by before.
